GOSSIP 2 GO SUPERSIZED 10/13WHY ARE MOST PEOPLE NAMED STAR OR STARR ANYTHING BUT?
The other night, former contestant Ryan Starr — who was once on "The Surreal Life" — showed up at L.A. gay bar Fubar and "gave a hideous karaoke performance of 'What's Up?' by 4 Non Blondes . . . then she did an encore." Meanwhile, Corey Clarke — who accused Paula Abdul of sleeping with him earlier this year — is following in Starr's footsteps and is the "secret" guest in "The Surreal Life" house next season with Alexis Arquette, which just finished filming. "Alexis has been blabbing about Corey all over town," said a source.
QUEER EYE FOR THE LESS FORTUNATE GUY
IT was nothing but love at top West Hollywood gay bar The Abbey when flamboyant style expert Carson Kressly was dining with a friend and spotted a bum panhandling. Instead of shooing the man away, Kressly invited him to join them for dinner and then treated him to a large box of desserts from the eatery's display case to take with him. To make matters even sweeter, Kressly added a $100 bill.
PARIS IS STILL BURNING
THE Simple Life" is over — at least for now. Fox has pulled the plug on the reality TV show starring ex-pals Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. The network said it "did not see a place for 'The Simple Life' on our schedule this season." But a source said that the real reason for the cancellation was Hilton and Richie's inability to end their feud. 20th Century Fox, the studio that produces the show, said it could move to another network.
GWEN STEFANI IS BREAKIN' RECORDS...FUNNY I DID THE SAME THING WHEN I HEARD HER RECORD
The irresistible track from Stefani's solo debut "Love, Angel, Music, Baby" - with its ludicrously simple marching-band beat and cheerleading chants - is now the first song in history to sell 1 million digital downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
The song, released last November on "L.A.M.B.," is a favorite at radio and MTV and spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 list. It has enjoyed huge crossover success on R&B and hip-hop charts.
"Hollaback" has also been ringing up sales in the telecommunications business. According to Telephia Mobile Audio Report, it is one of three songs by pop divas (along with "Cater 2 U" by Destiny's Child and "We Belong Together" by Mariah Carey) that dominated "real-tones" this summer.
But Stefani's song is the overall leader in legal downloads, approaching numbers not yet attained by any other artist.
In one week, the song - which has been on the singles charts for 29 weeks - had more than 60,000 sales. The number sold this week was 12,265, pushing "Hollaback Girl's" total to 1,005,280.
(Kelly Clarkson is No. 2 on the all-time list. Her "Since U Been Gone" has to date moved 918,702 downloads. Nielsen Soundscan has tracked legal downloads since June 2003.)
Outlets for sales of the legal downloads are such online retailers as iTunes, MSN, Napster, Rhapsody, MusicMatch and Sony Connect.
To honor her achievement, Stefani will receive a certificate at her Oct. 21 Hollywood Bowl concert.
"It's always an honor to be recognized for your music, and this is really the coolest," Stefani said in a statement. "It's exciting to see people embrace the song and really make it part of their lives. Whether it's CDs, computers or cell phones ... it really is bananas."
THAT'S WHAT I CALL A MAD DASH
The New York Daily News hears that when Damon Dash vacated the midtown Rocawear offices after selling his $30 million stake to Jay-Z, he made off with literally everything that wasn't nailed to the floor, down to the doorknobs. "As part of his deal, he got to keep his office furniture," reports a spy. "Little did they know that he'd be taking everything from window blinds to the hinges on the doors. You name it, he took it." Read more.
UNBREAKABLE WAS ALMOST UNHEARD
Although 'Unbreakable' is proving to be another hit for Alicia Keys, the song spent about two years in her vault before she decided to record it. "It's always been one of my favorite songs but it just didn't fit properly with the second album, so, I kind of put it on the shelf waiting for the perfect time," she told The Associated Press in a recent interview. BIG MAMA SPEARS PUTS STRONGHOLD ON MONEY
With Kevin Federline burning a hole in wife Britney Spears' purse, Life & Style reports that the singer's mother Lynne has stepped in to manage the couple's finances. "Lynne is not about to let Kevin squander all of Britney's money," a source said. The last straw may have been Federline's new multimillion-dollar dance school that he's building with Michael Jackson's father, Joe.
AND SPEAKING OF BRITNEY
In the new issue of Us Weekly, the magazine reveals how Britney Spears plans to remove the baby weight she gained during pregnancy. "Britney has a minimum of 25 pounds to lose," Us Weekly's Katrina Szish tells 'Extra'. "Some say she has even an excess of 50 pounds to lose." Read more.
